Blogger Insight: How to Start a Podcast Like a Pro!

how-to-start-a-podcast

Podcasting is becoming more and more of an extension bloggers use to expand their platform.  We've had our share of podcasts, and I even host one with my consulting business.  Podcasting does what blogging cannot.  It puts a voice to the content you here, which helps put a personality to the brand your coming into contact with.  Sometimes it's easier for us to convey a message via a podcast as opposed to a blog post, so the two definitely go hand in hand!

If you're a blogger looking to start your own podcast, here are some steps to take in order to make your podcast as successful as possible:

PODCAST THEME

When it comes to a podcast theme, make sure it's going to be something that you'll be passionate about because well...you'll have to create A LOT of episodes, like...a lot.  Don't pick a theme that you know you'll get bored of quick because once that happens, your podcast is doomed to die.  It's sometimes easier to start a podcast with your friends or group of people so that the content ideas are always flowing!

EQUIPMENT
For podcasting, you'll want to invest a good microphone.  I use the Blue Yeti microphone when I record Hustle the Blog and I love it!!!  That and a pop filter, and you're good to go on the equipment, well your computer too of course!

RECORD AUDIO

Audacity is the software I recommend for recording podcasts.  It's free, compatible with Windows & Macs, & easy to use and works with your podcast equipment.  Garage band is also a good software to use as well.

BACKGROUND MUSIC?

Background music isn't necessary when doing a podcast.  There have been many episodes that I chose to opt out of music and it sounded just fine.  If you do choose to utilize music, make sure you have permission to do so.  If you don't, your podcast can be flagged and possibly taken down altogether due to copyright laws, so be careful!

HOSTING

There are two platforms I would suggest having your podcast on.  When it's time for you to upload your podcast, upload to not only Soundcloud but also to iTunes as well.  In fact, you can set your RSS feed from Soundcloud in iTunes so once a new episode has been uploaded to Soundcloud, it will automatically upload to iTunes as well, pretty neat.

Simple huh?  There are so many people who make podcasting seem harder than what it is.  In actuality, you can get a podcast up and running within a matter of hours!  So get yourself a solid podcast theme, get your equipment, record your first episode, and get it uploaded!

Rants & Raves: Dealing with Grief as a Creativepreneur

dealing with grief as a creativepreneur

Death takes a toll on you in ways you just don’t even realize.  These past months have been draining, physically, mentally, emotionally, in every possible way.

On April 11th, I lost my father.  He passed away peacefully in his sleep.  If any of my daddy’s girls are reading this, then you know the hurt and pain I went through and am still dealing with.  I never imagined my father passing as young as he did.  He was only 54, that’s young in my book.  As a child, you always imagine your parents living forever, it’s naive I know, but that’s what we think, so when it came his time to go, my world was shattered.  My dad was the best dad ever, hands down.  It might sound cliché, but throughout all of his own personal trials and tribulations he was going through, he was still able to be a father to me.  He made me feel loved, he made it known that I was beautiful, he taught me how not to take shit from anyone, and most importantly, I couldn’t do anything wrong in my dad’s eyes (and I’ve done some fucked up shit).  Even at 25, I was his little girl, his princess, and the apple of his eyes…and now I don’t have that anymore.

The first two weeks of his passing were a whirlwind.  I cried for 3 days straight until my face was swollen (on top of already being sick with strep throat).  Then once I was over the hump of crying and actually accepting the fact that he was dead, it was the adulting shit I was faced to deal with.  I had to get my extended bereavement approved since we lived in two different states, had to inform family of what was going on, help my stepmom not only with her grief but to plan the funeral, clean my house just in case people stopped by, all shit you just don’t plan on doing, nor feel like doing because well, you just want to curl up in the corner and block the world out.

While dealing with my stepmom's grief, more so delusional shock, I had to also deal with other family issues as well.  My only brother from my father, my big brother, couldn’t even attend his services.  He’s currently in prison.  I could tell in his voice that he was mad at himself.  The fact is once he gets out, my dad won’t be there, and that’s something he has to live with for the rest of his life.  And worst of all, I had to tell my daughter that "Papa" passed away.  How do you explain to a very competent 5 year old about death?  I didn’t tell her for 4 days, and when I did she asked a lot of questions.  How did he die?  When is the funeral?  Is he in heaven?  It's hard...so fucking hard.

Work was the farthest thing from my mind.  I didn’t give a fuck about returning emails, blogging, not a damn thing.  And when I finally got in a place where I thought I could get back into "girl boss mode" I started to feel overwhelmed.  I don’t care what you say, but you have to take care of yourself before you can get back to work, especially during a difficult time like death.  The first part of self-care during death is to acknowledge your feelings, whether that’s crying, screaming, sitting in your room alone cut off from all communication, just do it.  As I said, once I was done crying and accepted the fact of what the reality was, I felt OK.  You're not going to feel 100% like yourself, and don't expect yourself to be, that's asking too much from yourself.  Once you’re in a place where you can think let alone function as yourself, let people know what has happened so they can give you space.  I emailed and/or texted who I know had contacted me or would be contacting me within the next two weeks regarding blogging or work and told them what it was.  People can’t respect your space if you’re not upfront and honest about what it is that’s going on.  More so, people are more caring than what you give them credit for.  All of the positive and encouraging words is what gave me the energy to actually get back to work.

What I've learned in my journey of dealing with grief is doing whatever you can to relax, de-stress, and to create an environment where you can come back to if and when your grief gets the best of you.  For me, that includes:
-long showers or baths
-blast your favorite music
-find old pics of your loved one and hang them up in a place where you’ll always see them
-TAKE A NAP!
-clean/organize
-soak your feet
-binge on your favorite tv show
-spend time with your favorite people
-meditate
-play computer games or something with little thought (that was something my dad loved to do)

Once you feel that you’re at that place where you can begin to be productive again, take these steps to make the process easier:

TAKE TIME TO GO BACK OVER EMAILS
this is crucial.  Take a few days to go over emails, this includes deleting unnecessary and spam emails.  This is going to make your life easier.

TO DO LISTS
-make a to do list and give yourself a few tasks every day.  It's important not to overwhelm yourself  because you won't be able to handle that much.  For each day, mark what is important as priority and make sure you get to those things first.

LET YOUR CLIENTS KNOW
Whether that's your blog readers, clients, or customers, let them know of the difficult time you are going through.  As I said before, you can't expect people to understand if you don't give them a chance to.

GOALS
Setting goals for me was a must.  With everything else I had going on in addition to dealing with my dads death, I needed a way to make sure I stayed on track.  I set goals for each month, and still have them in place of what I need/want to get accomplished.  These dates are flexible because again, my grief is still strong and there are days where I cannot function or don't want to be productive, but it's good to have a deadline in the back of your mind.

RELAX!
Even though you feel as if you are ready to get back into the swing of things, there are going to be times in the day that seem the most inconvenient where you just start to cry and you don't feel like being productive.  Recognize that you need breaks and time to relax and that the grieving process does not have a time limit.

I hope none of you have to endure anything like this anytime soon, it sucks, but if you do, I hope these steps make it easier for you to adjust to your new normal as a creativepreneur.

Blogger Insight: The Biggest List of Saint Louis Bloggers-Ever!!!

saint louis bloggers

Something hit me about a month ago, which was....

Why hasn't anyone done a St. Louis Blogger Roundup?

I've seen a few of my other blogger boos do roundups for their cities or roundups for different niches but why not St. Louis?

Well...I figured I would!

I got this idea from my boo Winnie of TheWireHangerbyWinnie.  She started a thread for St. Louis bloggers and I had just so happened to be working on this post trying to gather all of the bloggers that I know (she's the plug yall!).

Here's the thing.  This post isn't necessarily who I like more over others, I want this to be the biggest compiled list of St. Louis bloggers there is, from all different niches!  That's the reason why you will not see any niches listed for each blogger.  I know we tend to gravitate towards what we like as far as fashion bloggers, beauty bloggers, food bloggers, etc.  My goal is for anyone who looks at this post to check out EVERY BLOGGER on this list, point blank.

And with that being said I will definitely continue to add to the list as I network and come across new STL bloggers.  If you're a STL blogger or know of one who is not on the list yet, fill out this form to add them.  The list will be updated once a week, and shared each weekend.

Check out the list of bloggers thus far.  Remember to check out every blogger yall, like and share their posts, and connect!

Fashion & Style: Dionne Is That You ? (Clueless Inspired OOTD!)

Let me first say a few things:

This outfit was not planned like this
I hate Stacey Dash (she's a disgrace to the African American race and I would like to vote on trading her for Tommy from Power)
I did just watch Clueless

Nonetheless, this outfit is definitely a nostalgic OOTD to Clueless.  I'll admit, I wanted to be like Cher & Dionne when this movie came out.  Always fashionable, trendsetters, and ahead of their time.  Wanting to be like Cher and Dionne was like wanting to be one of the Spice Girls, Britney Spears, or apart of Destiny's Child...it was apart of our millennial culture.

As a product developer, I know that crushed velvet/velveteen is definitely on trend.  I don't mean the crushed velvet body con dresses and boots (even though I wouldn't mind a pair of dope burgundy crushed velvet boots) but more so making its way into shirts, skirts, and accessories, especially chokers.  Believe it or not, this crushed velvet shirt was not my first choice, but seeing how it went with my gingham skort (yep, a skort, I haven't worn one of these since grade school) it was the perfect match (both skort and velvet shirt are from Boohoo, leather jacket from Zara).

NOW MY BABY! Yes, I call my handbags my babies because they are.  If you know me, you know I'm known for really quirky handbags such as boom boxes, perfume bottles, and purses that light up.  When I saw this beauty on Dolls Kill....I just had to have.  Betsey Johnson...you're just gonna take all my little coins huh?!

torrid-boohoo-target-dolls kill-betsey johnson-zara

torrid-boohoo-target-dolls kill-betsey johnson-zara

These boots are something I will never give up.  Point blank.  As someone who has always had thick thighs, even in my skinnier years, I've always had trouble finding aesthetically appealing boots.  It seemed as if for me to get boots that were similar to what was and is offered to women with skinny legs, I had to pay a damn arm and a leg.  But then....Torrid blessed me with their inventory.  I was able to cop these babies for less than $70 on sale.  Sizing goes all the way up to 13W and extended wide calf is available!!!  Like bruh...Torrid you will be having my coins as well, hands down.

torrid-boohoo-target-dolls kill-betsey johnson-zara

look at that ass!

And because I had multiple people ask me about my highlight while I was out, thank Fenty Beauty (review coming soon).  Rihanna....just know I will be broke come October 13th when your holiday collection drops.

This is one of my favorite outfits thus far for this season.  Each individual element can obviously be worn separately but brought together, I've created the ultimate Clueless tribute!

SAMSUNG SIDE SYNC
Bruh....this is the G.O.A.T! And I am going to go out on a limb and say....F #teamapple.  Lol ok ok let me explain before y'all start commenting out the side of your neck.  Samsung Side Sync is what we discovered to be able to sync our phones to our laptops, just like Apple does with their products.  The thing is....this is compatible with both PCs and MACs, Androids & iPhones.  You can literally operate your phone from your computer.  Don't worry, we're going to have a tech segment on this and many other Samsung apps every Galaxy owner should have!

TAILWIND
This is a tool that is still on my radar to try because we desperately need to grow our Pinterest.  If you're looking to do the same, this tool is what you need!

Track the amount of hours you work on certain projects to help manage your time more effectively!

See those social media icons on our sidebar to the left? That's Sumo Me.  It provides tools to automate your blog's growth....simple.

I love Google Fonts being that this blog is hosted on Blogger, why?  Because you can easily install Google Fonts in order to customize your blog posts!

For anyone looking to start a podcast, Audacity is your must software to download.  We use audacity to record the audio for our podcasts.  Easy to use and free!

I love Georgia Lou Studios.  I've bought many of templates from her in addition to reading all of her helping blog posts on blog tips and tricks!

One of my gems I've recently discovered, a place to keep all of your passwords!

We use Bitly for url shortening and custom urls.  When we post on Twitter we use bitly to shorten our urls so we can stay within the word count.  When we promote our landing pages we use bitly urls to change the end to fit what we're promoting.

DISQUS
The preferred commenting system.  I love Disqus because it's more aesthetically pleasing than Google comments, and has SEO capabilities to help get you more exposure and comments on your content!

Jaunts & Junkets: 7 Tips for Traveling on a Budget!

traveling on a budget

Some people may not know, but I do a bit of traveling here and there.  From Atlanta to Vegas, Chicago, Charlotte, and back home, I've been able to fly and have a decent time without breaking the bank.  How?  It's all about taking unconventional/unique approaches to how you purchase your trip, more so being smart about how you do so!

Events: Kickin' it With the Cast of Power!

dre julio tommy power starz

Last night was one of those nights that we did not feel like going out.  It was gloomy, we were kind of annoyed, but we decided to chunk it up, get dressed, and head out to the AT&T store to meet the cast of Power.

Chronicles of a Sh***y Adulter: College Education is the Biggest Lie Next to Santa Clause

chronicles of a shitty adulter

You would think that with me being a #threedegreeshawty I would have this whole "adulting" thing mastered.   well I don't.  For some reason there's this correlation of having a college degree with being a "functional" adult in this society, and that shit is one of the most misleading concepts we've been taught next to the overweight guy who is thousands of years old somehow fitting down a skinny chimney and leaving presents for naive kids.

Rants & Raves: Why I Dumped the Fashion Industry

fashion-st-louis

I have contemplated writing this post for almost 2 years, around the time that we decided to re brand and not just be fashion bloggers, but become the nicheless badasses that we are.

Don't get it twist, I love fashion, cliché alert-fashion is my passion and always will be, but there are just people and situations that contribute to me stepping away from it all together.

Blogger Insight: 5 Benefits Creative Market Has for Bloggers You Didn't Even Know!

I have been spending my money too much lately.  But it hasn't been on quirky handbags or makeup like it usually is, I've literally spent $100 in one day in the Creative Market.

Now when I posted about this gem in one of my favorite blogging groups Black Bloggers United, only 1 person knew what I was talking about...BLOGGERS....CMON NOW!

In the Lou: Forget Targét, Shop at Here Today!

here-today

Why hasn't anyone told us about Here Today?!

Yall.....like, HOW DID WE NOT KNOW THIS STORE EXISTED?!

Here Today is the straight plug, hands down, point blank.  Our initial visit was simple, get stuff for my graduation turn up, which consisted of none other than liquor and food...but that quickly turned into an entire adventure we did not anticipate  From really cute sun dresses, to home décor, toys, electronics (like really good flat screen tvs), we found ourselves spending a good 3 hours in Here Today.  We ended up almost walking out without what the hell we came in there for in the first place.

Blogger Insight: How to Be a Rockstar on Instagram + 300 Hashtags to Use!

Bloggers, are you on Instagram? (that answer should be yes)

Better question, are you using Instagram effectively and to the best of its ability?

Now many of you probably shook your head no, and that's OK.  With Instagram's new algorithm and playa' hating, it seems almost impossible to have a swarm of following, likes, and engaging comments that turn into new blog post readers and clients.  Many assume that you can't have Instagram success unless you buy your followers and likes which I encourage you NOT to do!

Fashion & Style: The "Casual AF Let's Run Errands" Ensemble!

fashion and style

My life has turned how I look into a hot ass mess.

I'm that person at Walmart that will go with basketball shorts, a holey shirt, and some flip flops (no bonnet tho, I'm bald headed so it defeats the purpose).

Youtube: Storytime! Hotel from F***ing Hell Part 1!

*rolls eyes*

Why can't we just go somewhere and shit happens how it should?

Why is it every time we go ANYWHERE some fucked up shit always happens?!  Just why!

Long story short, we got played hard by Crowne Plaza/City Place (they don't know what the hell they want to be so we're just gonna call them Crowne Place, sounds better).

We had the worst experience ever, an experience from the deepest pits of hell.  Trust, we're gonna talk about it here on the blog, but we want you to see what we have to say in our first segment of this ordeal, trust.....you'll see why we had to make a video before the blog post.

Blogger Insight: Batch Posting in 5 Days-Everything You Need to Know!

batch posting

Batch posting, have you heard of it?

Well you may not have heard of it but I am certain you have attempted it at least once.

Batch posting is when you create multiple posts at one time in an attempt to create content for days, weeks, even months in advance.  I've done it before but fell off once my life started to get a lot busier and after doing a trial and error, I've figured out a way to break down the batch posting process to make it less daunting!

In The Lou: University City Seeks Artists to Aid in Community Project

The Olive Link in University City is preparing for a fresh makeover this summer thanks to a partnership between the City of University City, art professionals, and Olive Boulevard property and business owners.

During the month of May, the City of University City’s Department of Community Development is seeking applications from local artists to create and paint diversity-themed art projects on the Olive Link’s traffic signal and photocell boxes.

The project is part of University City’s commitment to being a welcoming city of diversity and inclusion. The painted boxes will serve as a symbol to celebrate the incredible diversity in St. Louis.

Each art project submission will be judged by a selection committee that will include neighborhood representatives, Olive Boulevard property and business owners, art professionals, and University City staff. Artists whose designs are chosen will then be invited to paint their designs within a three-week period with compensation.

Designs must be submitted by Friday, May 26. The selection committee will choose twelve works of art to be painted on the boxes, and contact artists by the week of June 12.

For more information, visit here or contact University City’s Manager of Economic Development, Jodie Lloyd, at 314.505.8522. Email submissions to jlloyd@uctymo.org

Rants & Raves: When Ish Ain't Changed (Our Reaction to #LA92)

It's a shame to feel that in 2017 nothing has change and no progress has been made.

I know you're like "what the hell is she talking about now".

Trust me, my angry rant has a purpose.

This past Saturday we were lucky enough to have attended the press viewing of LA92, a new documentary by National Geographic that takes a raw look into the events leading up to the LA Riots of 1992.

Blogger Insight: The Art of Sponsorships + Sample Pitch Letter!

Sooner or later as a blogger, you're going to get to the point of wanting to work with other companies and gaining sponsorship.  I remember the first time I realized that companies paid bloggers, whether with money, free product, or free services, to promote their business, I was in awe!

Hey beauty lovers, junkies, and hoarders (that’s me).  On today’s segment of “Find That Dupe, we’re going to look at Lime Crime’s DiamondLip Topper’s and…their counterfeits.

Now look, I do not necessarily encourage you to purposely buy fake brands, meaning buying brands that try to deceive themselves as being another brand because that’s wrong and I didn't intentionally mean to buy these dupes! This is how this happened.

Rants & Raves: Daddy Lessons

I can remember for the longest just yearning to be “daddy’s little girl” because I’ve never had that feeling before...and still don’t know what that feeling is like. Instead I was in fear of him for majority of my life. The biggest fear was judgment and not being enough to him in his eyes.

Confession Time: My Best Friend Dumped Me.

Do you have a friend that promises to call you back but you hang up knowing she won't? Or you make plans with her and she cancels after you've already gotten dressed? Or she says she's too tired to go out but you see her on SnapChat and she's hugged up with that same lame she calls her 'boyfriend'? Well...I am that friend. CORRECTION...I WAS that friend. Especially in my early 20's. Now as I get closer to 30 I understand the value of true friendships, and luckily I was able to hang on to a couple of my girls.

Honestly, I didn't realize my actions were bad or disrespectful until recently. I got 'friend dumped'. Yes...DUMPED. It was almost like a relationship ended. She blocked me on all social media and we just didn't talk anymore. I finally mustered up the strength to reach out to her a year or so later and she told me: "I just wasn't a good friend to her." I had to sit and think about what a good friend was...it's safe to say she was right, I wasn't. The older you get the harder it is to hold on to good secure friendships. As relationships start, children are born, careers are launched, there are so many other factors that get in the way.

How can you maintain those GGF's (good girlfriends)? There will always be unpreventable things that happen...but let's be real in my case most of it was preventable OR I would double book myself.

1. K.I.T. - Keep in Touch. My friends and I now have a group text, and for other friends I try to reach out at least once or twice a month. Reaching out can be a phone call, a text or even an invite to an event I'm attending.

2. Schedule Girl's Nights - My closest friends and I have a girls night out once a month that each of us plans. It's always something different and we all agree on a date that works with everyone's schedule. The best part about it is seeing what the other individuals enjoy doing, or when we can try new things or restaurants.

3. Be Selfless - I have trained myself to step out of my introverted shell sometimes. When I normally may say no, I'll say yes. Some friends become family and you never know how your impact may help somebody else's life.

I know I'm too grown to make rules for keeping friends, but honey, the struggle is real. But learning to balance your life is worth the challenge. What's life without friends anyhow?
