Blog Talk: 5 Blog Mistakes I Won't Do AGAIN! (and You Shouldn't Either!)

blog-mistakes

As our 4th year blogiversary is approaching, I took a look back at some of the old posts we've done.  I honestly cringed, why?  Because knowing what I know now I want to tell my former self "no don't do that".  But hey, new blogger will make new mistakes.  I know now however, not to make them again!  Here are 5 mistakes I won't do again!:

USING GOOGLE IMAGES
When I first started blogging, and you can go back in the archives and see, I was infamous for using Google images, just like any other new blogger because I didn't know much about stock photography and didn't have any money to purchase a quality camera.  People may think using Google images isn't a bad thing, especially if you cite your source, but I've read over the years too many cases where bloggers are sued by photographers over the use of photos on their blog that they did not have permission to use.  There are too many stock photo websites such as Createherstock, 50 Shades of Black Stock, Haute Chocolate, Death to Stock Photos, plus hundreds more to be stealing off of Google. ALL of the images used on this blog now are either stock photography or original images that we take.  I personally do not have time nor the money to be paying court fees and what not, child please!

NOT TAKING THE TIME OUT TO LEARN SEO
Again, I'll chunk this up to newbie fuck ups, but learning SEO is something every blogger should do, whether new or seasoned.  For the first year I never took  the time out to save photos correctly, add in keywords, add a SEO booster in the code of my blog, use a description that would be searchable on each search engine, none of that!  While I am still no master when it comes to SEO, there are things I know I need to do before I hit that publish button, and it shows in my numbers!

NOT BEING PROUD OF MY BLOG
I say this not because I never was proud of my blog, but I never promoted myself or my brand as much as I should of, I still struggle with this.  For example, every time I made a new post on the blog in the beginning I would make a status on Facebook and ask people to check it out before I made a business profile.  I don't know who the fuck I ticked off or if I just have haters, but Facebook wouldn't let me post my url anymore because someone had reported it as spam.  That fucked up my courage to be proud of something that I had created from the ground up and it took me a while to start sharing my blog on my personal accounts again, more so asking for support.  I've learned now that I can't help who wants to hate, that's not my problem.  If I want to see the brand grow in the way I know it can I have to keep it visible and in the minds of the people around me.

BEING TOO SCARED TO DIVERSIFY
This...is why I never really succeeded in being a sales associate.  For one I've always had the mindset of not being pushy and getting people to buy anything.  When it came to the blog I never thought that people would be interested in a product or service that I would provide enough to buy.  What I've learned from that is no idea is a bad idea, and you never know what is going to happen until you try.  I rather create products and services and see that it has failed instead of not even trying.  So...stay tuned for our new store launching in January!

NOT BEING OPEN FOR CRITIQUE
As being a natural born leader, I never took criticism well because I always wanted to be in the right, and always wanted to be in charge.  But as a blogger, you're operating a business, and in order for that business to grow, you have to be open to feedback and critique.  Whether that's getting ideas on how to improve your blog template, new content ideas, or how to expand, asking for feedback every once in a while is something every blogger should do, better yet this is a MUST!

What mistakes have you made as a blogger you laugh or cringe about now? Drop a comment below and let us know!

Beauty: Anatomicals-Products Without the BS

anatomicals

Shopping...as usual, and I'm browsing the skin products in ULTA.  I'm literally getting ready to leave and I come across these colorful tubes and bottles.  I automatically grab, head to the checkout, pay, and go about my day.

Ok, if you haven't realized I buy a lot of shit, half of the time not really knowing what the hell I'm buying.  But this time...I am so glad about what I bought.

Anatomicals, probably the coolest skincare and beauty line on the planet.  Paraben free, full of the most awesomely awesome smells ever, and never tested on animals, and with clever plays on famous songs and catchy phrases, this is one skinline you need to check out, even their website is funny af:

From face care, to hair care, to even lip balms, Anatomicals seems to have it all together.  Here is what I seemed to manage to get (these were literally the last of what ULTA had)

I've already used the lemongrass and grapefruit body cleanser and the cherry body lotion.  The smells are very much authentic, in a good way.  They smell fantastic and it isn't overpowering.  Both the body lotion and the cleaner and so moisturizing, and I don't know what secret ingredient these products have, but I fell right to sleep after using!  My body was calm, relaxed, and wasn't as achy (was recently in an accident).

This is a company I definitely will be buying from in the future, and don't worry we'll be sure to include them on our ultimate gift guide list dropping this Thursday, so you'll be seeing more of them from us!

Blog Talk: The 5 Misconceptions About Blogging

blogging

Blogging is an...interesting industry nonetheless, and as someone who is apart of it, there are many ideas about the whole idea of blogging that gets twisted around into something that, well, just isn't true. As bloggers, we already have to deal with struggles and our pet peeves, and now....misconceptions.

Here are the 5 most common misconceptions of blogging:

Blogging is Easy

via GIPHY

Who the hell lied to you? I've talked about this time, and time, and effing time again.  Blogging is hard work!  I started to blog as a hobby, no biggie, something to do, but once I started getting more and more involved in it I realized that this could easily be considered my second job.  If I was to track my hours for blogging (we have a printable for that) I would easily rack up 8 hours a day if not more on blogging related tasks.  Child please, blogging is hard, and you'll fall hard on your face if you jump in thinking it's not.

You'll Make Loads of Money Instantly

via GIPHY

It is very much true, and has been proven that you can make a lot of money from blogging, whether from direct sponsorship's or from other opportunities that come from it.  BUT....this shit doesn't happen overnight.  Here on our blog we have just now been able to start monetizing, and even that is a struggle.  What you think is fair as far as your rate, others look at you like "a no". You don't always get the opportunities you seek out, and it becomes more of a "no" game rather than a "yes" game.  Again, making coin, lots of it from blogging is very much possible, but it takes time so don't expect to start rolling in the dough as soon as you make your first post.

Blogging Isn't a Real Job/Career

via GIPHY

It might be a little unorthodox, but blogging is a job, it is a career.  Just because it doesn't necessarily consist of going to a physical place and reporting to a superior or upper management doesn't mean that blogging isn't a job.  In fact, existing companies are incorporating blogging into their business models as it has been proven that companies who blog bring in more revenue and new clients than companies that don't.  So whether you want to believe it or not, blogging is a job...point, blank, period.

Bloggers Aren't Real Journalist

via GIPHY

*rolls eyes*  This ties into my previous post when people say that bloggers aren't real journalists.  I will admit, anyone has the power to own a blog site and technically be a blogger, but that doesn't mean that they have the sense enough to research or proofread.  But in that same instance, the majority of bloggers are either freelance journalists, former journalists, or have backgrounds in English or journalism.  In addition, many bloggers do take the time out to research everyday on the topics they're going to talk about, acquire resources, and edit and proofread before they hit the publish button.  I personally believe people who say that bloggers aren't real journalists are the ones who are mad that bloggers essentially don't have to answer to an editor.  That they're columns aren't cut up into pieces in order to uphold the publication's attitudes and morals, and in a nutshell....bloggers can say what they want.  No one can stop them because they front all of the bills for their site.

Salty much?

You Have to Have a Niche to be Successful as a Blogger

via GIPHY

Says who?  Niches are for SCARED Bitches (shameless plug).  The whole reason why I rebranded is because I simply couldn't talk about fashion and makeup all damn day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  There were topics brewing inside of me that I wanted to express my opinion about.  As much as I love fashion, I like to debate about cultural issues, talk about food, and other things.  So why shouldn't I be able to talk about them?  In regards to monetization and acquiring customers...what I talk about doesn't have anything to do with that.  For these blogging experts...what's the real reason why you tell other bloggers they can't have multiple niches?

I'll wait...

Rants & Raves: 10 Signs You're a Sh***y Adulter

I introduced a new segment a few weeks ago, "Chronicles of a Shitty Adulter".  As much as you might laugh at that title, it's a true testament of my life.  I suck at adulting.  From simple tasks to motherhood, as a millennial I wholeheartedly feel we got the shit stick of how to be an adult.  So as a cute little introduction, here are 10 signs that you're a shitty adulter just like me:

When the roaches have permanently moved and and started paying rent because of how dirty your place is

via GIPHY

When you find yourself not being able to "traditionally" parent

You plot to call in a bomb threat so you don't have to go to work, no matter if you'll miss pay or not

via GIPHY

A wallet?  WTF is a wallet?  You take the chance of leaving your cash and cards in the car, on the floor, in your purse...who cares right!
via GIPHY

You have your daughter or the dog answer the calls from bill collectors instead of having the balls to tell them to fuck off....this is actually funny

via GIPHY

You don't make doctor's appointments, ever.  That was mom's job.  Fuck that shit Jesus is my fence between myself and that sickness!
You still use words like "night night" and gosh gee willikers, I mean would yall rather me cuss?

via GIPHY

Taxes? WTF are those and how the hell do you get them done?

via GIPHY

You make a conscious effort to save, plan out for the next year, you know big people things...and then Boohoo has an effing sale....

When you honestly rather just watch cartoons all fucking day instead of adult.  You get whiny, tired, and revert back into being a baby

via GIPHY

Adulting...I don't fucking understand.  I don't.  And at the end of the day I am brave enough to admit I suck balls at it.

via GIPHY

So if you feel for this post, and can relate, be sure to tune in January 1st for this new segment.  Until then, try your best to adult, don't whine and scream, or burn shit down in the process.

Rants & Raves: Get TF Outta Here Episode 2!

trick daddy

Never intended for this to be a full blown segment, but there is just so much SHIT that pisses me off, confuses me, and boggles my mind, so hey we got a new episode!  If you didn't check out our first episode make sure to do so here.  In today's episode of Get TF Outta Here, I talk about Trick Daddy and his comments towards black women, Kirkwood High School and their white privilege, and...have you heard of PopSeeKo?

Rants & Raves: Kirkwood's White Privilege Strikes Again

kirkwood-high-school

As funny as this picture is (like c'mon this costume it's perfect costume) white privilege is very much apparent, I will argue with anyone on this.

What sparked my...pissiness on this subject was an article that recently was circulated by STL American, on Kirkwood, the school district and the community, refusing to accept the fact that there is an noticeable disregard of racial situations and stereotypes against their minority students and community members.

Say what you want.  You can say I'm just another black person "crying wolf" whatever floats your boat.  But considering I'm an alumni of this school and the fact that I've been apart of this school district from kindergarten to 4th grade, and then from 7th grade until senior year, there's no crying wolf these ways.

The specific situation that was discussed in the article was a black face situation, where a student black faced himself and several African American students took the issue to the faculty as they were offended.  Well...according to Mrs. Ricks, the "counselor", racism doesn't happen in Kirkwood and a black face situation couldn't have happened at the school.  Oh and let's get one thing clear...she's not a real counselor, she's the person who stands in the hallway and gives you tardies. She's a grown ass, glorified hall monitor...bloop.

Anyway, as being a black student from this school, what I read utterly pissed me off.  How, as a white member of this naive community can you tell a black person that racism doesn't happen in said community?  How?! Are you an albino black person?  No, so how in the entire fuck will you ever know if racism happens since it wouldn't ever happen to you?!  Like that shit just bamboozled me so hard yall!

And unfortunately these students experienced what we all have in our prior years, that the faculty doesn't do shit.  Whether it's because they feel they really don't have any power to do so, or whether they just don't want to face up to the reality of what actually happens in this community...but too often we're told it'll be looked into, it's not, and the situation is never heard of again...until it happens again.

I swear to God I don't understand how this has been tolerated in an educational setting...I just don't.

So, being the outspoken person that I have become, and I say become because I was not like this in high-school, I decided to email ALL 5 principals regarding how I felt as an alum and a person of the media.  In this email I not only addressed my old principal AND the black principal of the school...here's what I had to say:

kirkwood-high-schoolkirkwood-high-school

kirkwood-high-school

I honestly didn't expect an email, I never do when I send inquiries regarding media relating things, but ironically enough, I got one response back, from my old principal.  While his response was much appreciated, I could tell he was trying to save face, and not step on any toes.  I know my old principal, he's not racist at all.  But the fact is, he works in an environment where he sees this happening everyday, and to avoid getting in trouble with his superiors and other members in the community, he wanted to be courteous to "both sides".  My thing is...I didn't know there was two sides to a black faced situation....

kirkwood-high-school

And literally within 2 weeks of me emailing, another situation came about.  A black pommie (dancer) at Kirkwood was criticized for kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance during a football game.  Many said that she was disrespecting our country and should just leave if she didn't like being here, another person made the assumption that she shouldn't have anything to be oppressed about because she goes to Kirkwood....what in the entire fuck!

kirkwood-high-school

kirkwood-high-school

kirkwood-high-school

I even did a video expressing my complete and utter disgust (start at 5:37)

At this point, I am just so appalled, I don't claim that school or community any longer, if anyone asks I was homeschooled....case closed.

Blog Talk: The Art of the Blogging Binder

blogging-binder

As 2017 is approaching, I told myself I would get organized and STAY organized.  If you know me, then you know I can be somewhat of a hog.  How I'm able to function, I don't know, but at times it does affect my productivity.

Instead of using a blogging planner, which I've tried many of times and failed, I decided to go a different approach and create my own blogging binder!  Why a blogging binder you ask?  Because it gives me the option of not only making it more personable which motivates me to actually keep up with it, but I can tailor it to what I need to use it for.

FIRST STEP: CHOOSE A CUTE BINDER!

You can find a cute binder anywhere, but my go to is Target.  They have awesome binders, in different prints, colors, and sizes.  I have a coral and gold pineapple binder that I got for $5.99.  Honestly, it's all psychological, but when you look at something aesthetically pleasing, it makes you want to use it more.

NOW IT'S TIME TO ORGANIZE

Now that you have your binder, it's time to organize it in a way that benefits you the most.  While we are all different as bloggers and have different things that we do with our blogs, these basic categories are what every blogger needs in their binder:

EDITORIAL CALENDAR
SOCIAL MEDIA CALENDAR
FINANCIALS
PLANNING
IDEAS
TO-DO

What I tend to do is keep this updated every 1-2 weeks.  In between update times I write in what needs to be added and cross off what has been done.  You can add as many categories that fit your needs such as MEETING NOTES, VLOG SCRIPTS, TRIP ITINTERARY, OUTREACH, whatever will help you stay organized for 2017!

Jaunts & Junkets: Our Staycation to Ameristar!

ameristar-saint-louis

Back in the summer, we had the pleasure of covering the Show Me the Beauty International Hair Expo.  And while we were indeed there to have fun, we also were there to have a much needed mini vacation, or staycation if you will, and Ameristar was the perfect place for us to do so.

Living area, two spacious beds which was more than enough room for the 4 of us, and a BIG bathroom, this was the perfect room for us to accommodate what we needed during our stay.  I mean the bathroom alone sold me.  Standing shower plus a separate bathtub, separate toilet area for privacy, and a two sink counter with a makeup mirror, we were in heaven!

ameristar-saint-louis

On top of having a great room, Ameristar has a lot to offer inside the hotel itself and in the surrounding area.  Restaurants, arcade, and of course the casino, on top of being close to other attractions in the historic downtown Saint Charles area.

All in all, we had a bomb ass time at the Ameristar, and trust, we're planning on going back there very soon!

Fashion & Style: Pinstripes & Owl Mascots

ootd-just-bloggers-no-explanation

Last night after being hopped up on meds (I was in a car accident y'all I don't intentionally do drugs) I made my way over to Saint Louis Fashion Week's Caleres Designer Competition (recap coming soon).  Once again, I don't like doing outfit posts just for the sake of blogging, but hell I've been ON POINT these last few days, I just can't help my slaying potential.

ootd-just-bloggers-no-explanation

Absolutely love this dress that I scored from Boohoo (50%) off.  I read somewhere that stripes do not flatter someone who has a much curvier figure, well I don't know what stripes they were referring to but that is a mutha-f***ing lie!  It could also be the cut and drape of this dress but not only did I feel comfortable, I love how it fit on my body, I didn't even have to wear any shape wear.  Mind you, I did look like I just got out of jail...but I think I still pulled it off.

ootd-just-bloggers-no-explanation

New look has been very good to me lately.  I scored these from Asos for only $31 and once again I was able to walk in them in entire night.  A burgundy block heel with gold embellishment around the heel and on the back zipper, these small details are what helped bring this outfit to life.

Everyone, meet Perry, our mascot!  I kid you not everyone felt on my purse as if this was my pet.  This fun, whimsical handbag is something I scored from ALDO during their Halloween promotion, and come to find out...it's sold out!!!  They have a white and black one...but it doesn't measure up to Perry.  I also felt the contrast in not only colors but textures helped flow with the boots.  A very unconventional outfit that became something I will rock again and again and again!

Blog Talk: How to Prepare for the 2017 Blogging Year!

how-to-prepare-for-the-2017-blogging-year

OK! You know what’s funny; it’s almost the end of the year.  I don’t know about you, but I damn sure know that 2016 flew by way too quick for my liking.  Since the New Year is almost upon us, it’s time to not only reflect on our blogging wins and things we need to work on but we also want to prepare for 2017 in order to make the New Year the best one yet.  I know for us, not only are we preparing for a blogiversary in January (4 years yall 4 years!) but we are also outlining how we want to expand physically by traveling for events and business wise by what we can offer to our bomb readers!  So if you’re in the same boat, this video is just for you.  Here are 10 things you need to do in order to prepare your blog for the New Year!

#1-DECLUTTER!

This means delete and organize files on your computer, your email (I currently have over 26,000 emails....Diamond would slap the shit outta me right now) and any physical files you have related to your blog.  At the beginning of the year we want to focus on working in a clean and organized work space.  Also, trash those draft posts.  Let’s face it, if you haven’t blogged about that budding idea that you thought of in the share 6 months ago...it ain’t happening girl.  DELETE, DELETE, DELETE!

#2-Delete Photos that Aren’t Yours!

Google has become our best friend as bloggers because copying an image for our post is a simple click, but as we know, more and more bloggers are getting in trouble for using images that aren’t theirs.  So, first and foremost replace any Google images with stock photos or your own original photos.  Even with linking a photo that you got off the internet, it still isn’t enough because you don’t have permission.  After you have replaced all of your photos, make it a habit to use only stock photos, your own photos, or photos you  have permission to use (we’ll link some bomb stock photo websites in the description that let you use their pics FOR FREE!)

#3-Make Sure ALL of Your Blog Posts are SEO Optimized

This...will be a task.  Us personally, we have 4 years of posts we need to make sure are all SEO optimized which means keywords are added, pictures are saved correctly with alt tags, links aren’t broken, etc.  This task is something no one wants to do, but if you want to get that steady traffic that is very much possible to obtain even while you’re sleep, you have to make sure everything is SEO optimized.

#4-Make Sure Your Website Template is How You Like It

Before the New Year begins, it’s the perfect time to play around with different blog templates, you never know what you’ll like, and many website have affordable templates for you to use (as low as $10 for all the rights, we’ll drop the links below yall).

#5-Begin to Plan Your Content

You don’t need to know exactly what you’re going to post each day of the new year, but it’s good to start thinking of themes for a few months or around a special event so it gives you an idea of what you can plan to post.

#6-Become Your Own PR Rep

I say this with the intention of it’s up to you to keep track of your contacts in order to create those collaborations.  In your blog planner or in an excel file, create a list of blogs you follow, brands you want to work with, and PR companies that have contacted you with all of their information.  At the end of the year, send a warm hello, introduce or re-introduce yourself and just let it be known that you are open to any future opportunities for the year to come.

#7-Research What Events You Want to Attend for the Next Year

This is something that I always implement.  Whether it’s a blogging related event such as a blog conference or other events related to your niche, make a note of it so you can plan ahead, save money if need be, and even reach out to see how you can be involved!

#8-Create a Goal List

What do you want to achieve next year?  Anything new you want to try? Sell a product? Create a workshop?  This is where you’ll list all of those blog aspirations you have for your brand.  Once you’ve created the list, you’ll be able to sit down and work through out to implement each of your ideas!

#9-Have an Re-Introduction of Yourself, and Your Brand

New Year = followers, so it doesn’t hurt to show them who you are.  Whether in a re-introduction post or a revamped about me page, having a fresh set of eyes means being able to tell your story again.

#10-Have an open mind!

I think this goes without saying, but be open to whatever comes your way.  You might blog about fashion one day...and end up turning nicheless like we did.  It’s honestly all about taking what comes your way in stride.

These tips will definitely prepare you for the best blogging year you have had thus far!
And as a treat, we went ahead and did a video for you guys for those who love to listen to my voice AND we have a new FREE printable!  It’s a checklist that outlines what you need to do to prepare for 2017, all of the basics that we’ve covered in this post and in the video above!

Fashion & Style: Grunge, 70's Flare, & 90's Bling + GIVEAWAY!

I tend not to do fashion posts as often as I use to because I want it to feel organic, meaning I want to capture the moment that I'm already wearing a bomb ass outfit instead of putting together one just for the sake of blogging...and I finally had my moment.

Had a fun night out planned with Diamond for FGI Fashion After 5.  The thing is, a lot of the members in this group are much older than us, so something in me felt I had to bring the edgy factor when it came to my outfit.  Little did I know I would grow to love every element that made up this chic ensemble.

fashion-and-style

fashion-and-style

As a thick, curvaceous woman...trying to find wide legged jeans or pants is a nightmare, especially if you're short.  Your pants either look flooded, or you look like a rectangle, not flattering at all!  So when I found these pants on River Island...on sale at that, I had to snatch them up.  They fit so beautifully.  I actually overestimated and got them a little too big because you never know when ordering online (for any of my plus size divas, River Island is a great place to shop).

fashion-and-style

And probably the wow factor of my outfit, my Louisiana chain clutch from ALDO....yea, it's the truth.  With all of the cute little charms there honestly wasn't a need for me to wear any jewelry, the purse wore it for me!

fashion-and-style

fashion-and-style

THESE SHOES! Ok so someone, who might have been intoxicated, asked me if these were Gucci...baby I didn't know I looked like I had Gucci money!  To answer that...I don't, but it just goes to show that detailing can make any item look as expensive and high fashion as you want it to.  So how much did I really pay for these shoes? $25, and actually a little less with a coupon code I had.  Yes, $25 for these New Look Wide Fit Gem Block Heels from Asos.  I honestly almost shed a tear.  Because of my weight gain over the past few years, not only has it been hard to find heels that fit, but that are comfortable for me to walk in.  I was able to stay in these heels the entire night, no walking bare foot, leaning on people, or struggling to walk to the car, and for me that is a big accomplishment.

fashion-and-style

Now I said before my clutch had enough bling on for the both of us...but this choker is something I couldn't resist.  Along with this mesh tee from Boohoo...it yelled sexy grunge and I couldn't pass it up.  If you notice...I have big boobies (a blessing and a curse) and with the new trend of bralettes...big boobs don't mix with this trend.  I've tried others that were suppose to be L/XL/XXL and it looks like string hanging from my chest.  So when I found this bralette from Boohoo that not only covers all of my goods but also gave me decent support...I had to snatch it up!

Grunge, 70's Flare, & 90's Bling

Who knew that simple finds while just casually online shopping would turn into such an edgy look?  I didn't, but look what you can make happen!
So something that we haven't done in a long time is do our gift card giveaway, and so you guys can be able to recreate this look with your own personal spin, we we're giving away THREE gift cards!
