alexis cook

I hope you all have been keeping up with us this week. We have a lot going on, but the most exciting is our Pins and Needles Previews!  We featured Isaiah Jenkins Tuesday, and today we're featuring Alexis Cook!  Another talented designer and entrepreneur from Saint Louis, her colorful and fun designs will have you entranced in a good time on the runway!  Dreaming of becoming afFashion designer at a very young age, she started her first business Alexis’Sassy Sandals, at the age 13 which included new and trendy sandals,  She continued pursuing her dreams in fashion by attending Lindenwood University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design. As a top student in her design class, She was recognized with many awards including Most Advanced Student, Best Use of Textiles, Cover Award, and Best Design Workmanship. She's been honored to showcase her work in many local fashion shows, including Missouri Style Week. Her designs have also been published in Gazelle STL and featured on many St. Louis news channels. Alexis would describe her brand, Alexis Cook (AC) as whimsical and intricate and women who wear AC exude a feminine confidence and command, deserving attention.

When was the first moment you knew you wanted to be a designer?
When I was 13 I started my first business, Alexis’ Sassy Sandals. I gave plain sandals a new trendy look by adding fun details to make them standout. The business was so successful that I was able to buy my first sewing machine with a portion of the profit. Quite a large purchase for a 13 year old! I then began to create purses, curtains and pillows. From the beginning, I was self taught and made all my own patterns

alexis cook

How would you classify your brand/line? Meaning what do you want people to feel or take away when they see your work.
The AC brand focuses on women’s ready-to-wear and couture. My collections are typically very colorful with intricate details. The AC woman exudes a feminine confidence and her look commands, deserving attention.

alexis cook
As a fashion designer, where do you turn to for inspiration when it comes to creating new collections or looks?
Colors are my inspiration. I want my looks to scintillate and radiate happiness

How do you set yourself apart from other designers to make yourself unique?
I differentiate myself  from other designers by adding intricate details to my designs. My upcoming Spring/Summer 2016 collection is inspired by a chic, swank picnic. Intricate, vinyl flowers dance throughout the collection to provide the ultimate feministic touch. Hundreds of these vinyl flowers were individually cut out and hand sewn onto the garments.

alexis cookWhat advice can you give other aspiring designers who are looking to take the step of pursuing a career in fashion design?
The best advice I can give an aspiring designer is passed along from one of my college professors, and great friend, Nasheli Juliana. She once said, “You can be amazing, but if you are a diva or your ego is bigger than your talent... No one will want to work with you, keep it low, always be kind, respect your models, always say thank you.”

Who is your favorite designer (besides yourself) or favorite designer's collection?
I have 3 designers that I admire. Giambattista Valli, Kate Spade and Betsey Johnson.

Describe the essence of your brand is 3 words.
Whimsical, Opulent, and Vivid.

I know I'm excited to see what Alexis will put on the runway, I can tell she has something up her sleeve!  If you haven't purchased tickets yet, stop slacking and do so here.  Also make sure to check out Alexis's designs at alexiscookdesigns.com or contact her at alexis_cook16@yahoo.com.  Stay tuned for more Pins & Needles Preview Designer Showcase Features the rest of this week!

Networking Part 1: The Basics Every Fashion Blogger Should Know

networking

I have been trying to do this post for a month! I originally recorded a bomb ass video...and deleted it, DELETED IT!  *Begins to whoo-sah* Ok I'm straight, but for real the reason why I wanted to do this post as a priority is because networking, for fashion bloggers, bloggers in general, or any business minded individual is key to success.  That motto which goes "sometimes it's who you know rather than what you know" is true, hands down.  For fashion bloggers in particular, we have our success measured in what's called influence, and the more influence we have the more we are "creditable" to where brands want to work with us.  But what if you're a fashion blogger just starting out in the process of building that influence?  I experienced this same dilemma not too long ago, especially when it was me by myself .  Learning everything a long the way I developed my own ways of networking.  Today what I'll discuss are the basics of networking, mainly when it comes to fashion events, shows, or just any type of function with others within your niche.

Before you go, research the event.

I would definitely compare this to researching a company before going on an interview.  By researching the designer(s) in the runway show, or the company who's throwing the event, you get a better sense of what to expect.  Diamond and I actually do this when deciding on what fashion shows to go to in our city (later post).  Also, this gives you information on "who's who" and the top dawgs you should be keeping your eye out for to slip your business card to.

If you can, opt-in for VIP!

I developed this method at first not from a networking stand point but from a t shirt and goodie bag whore stand point (lol).  But fact is, when you're at an event, the important people are more prompted to talk to people in VIP.  Most of those people are associated with the event, or are influencers that can make or break the event, such as with good or bad publicity.  And frankly, if you're in VIP, people will think you're as important as you think you are!

Branch out!

I've mentioned this before and will continue to do so. I am morbidly scared of people and social situations.  I hide it well because over the years I've just learned to deal with it but I still sometimes have trouble leaving my friends to talk to complete strangers.  Hopefully no one has this phobia, but I know a lot of us are anxious when it comes to introducing themselves.  I suggest introductions to 2-3 people at any event you go to.  Not too many, and a quick introduction is fine.  From my experience once you introduce yourself to one person, you start getting friendly with everyone else and the fear leaves right out your body (or that could be the liquid courage).

Always have a take away.

When networking, always leave that person with some take away of yourself, whether it's a business card or event flyer of your own, they'll be able to have something to remember you and you won't get lost in the sea of faces they met.

Be interactive, and proactive.

Ok fact is, don't just go to an event to sit there, you could've stayed yo' ass at home for all of that.  When going to an event participate in what they have to offer, open bar, free food, photo booth, whatever they have, have fun with it!  If you're at a runway show take mental notes of the collection being shown, whether it's colors being used, fabric selections, or structure of garments, just find something intriguing you liked.  Then before the event is over find whoever is responsible for the event such as the designer or production manager, share your positive thoughts and leave your contact information.  You just don't know what doors could open from one positive comment.

WHAT NOT TO DO:

Get overly drunk

This is just a given.  It's ok to partake in open bars these events most likely will have, but don't get so drunk that you embarrass yourself, more so, make a really bad impression on certain people that matter.

Don't act too high and mighty

I've known bloggers who come, late as hell, prance around because they got in for free and they think they're the shit, and then leave.  No matter how much of an expert you are, always use events as learning and networking opportunities and be humble!

Don't say negative comments out loud.

Every event you go to you won't like.  And if you're going there to do a review, then you're going to be highly critical because you want to give your honest opinion.  If you do unfortunately have a bad experience try to keep it inside, or whisper to your friend to let it out, but always still have a positive attitude.  Do not let anyone hear your comments out loud you don't know, because they could be apart of why your experience is bad.

Now this list is definitely not the same as those generic networking lists out there but that's the point.  These steps are everything I've used to get to where I am now so I know they will work.  Let me know in the comments below how to do network!?

Blogger Spotlight With Girl In Betsey!

girl in betsey

You guys know I love to lurk (lol), but really what I love doing is exploring other blogs.  Sometimes I get wrapped up in everything I do for this blog that I feel the desire to just communicate with other bloggers and get insight on how they operate their blogs.  So when I stumbled upon Girl In Betsey, I instantly liked, LOVED the blog from first site.  Maybe it's because of her template, it's just so chic-ly minimalist, that she incorporates her everyday life into helpful blog posts, or that her photography is slayage and I need to learn some tips from her!  Whatever the case may be, Girl In Betsey is one of my favorite blogs and it's only fitting that Girl In Betsey would be next up in our Blogger Spotlight series, so check out our Q&A with the girl behind it all, Krystin!:

What made you start blogging?

I started blogging when I attended one of the first fashion shows I was involved in, from then on I wanted to document my life in the fashion industry.

What challenges have you faced thus far as a blogger and how have you pushed threw them?
Photography was a challenge at first, but I overcame this challenge by investing in a better camera and editing programs.
What is one thing you wish you would have known before you started blogging?
I wish I would have known how important it is to network. Going to events is a huge part of blogging and I wish I had done that off the bat.

What is one tip you have to share with fellow bloggers?
Get out there and network. Don’t underestimate yourself in your industry, go to events and make contacts.

What's a few random (and fun) facts about yourself!
I love hanging out with my dog Bella, and she occasionally makes an appearance on the blog.

Krystin definitely shared some great blogging and networking advice, which ties into our Networking Series premiering today!  But until then make sure to visit Girl In Betsey, read her amazing articles, and show her love on Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest (her account is bomb.com)!

Strappy Business

The world has many great things to offer: champagne, Chanel, modern medicine, iPhones, bread…the list goes on. But, nothing tops that list quite like a good pair of strappy heels. Forget the disciples, these are saviors for the lazy girl who’s into looking good while being fairly mobile, but not into breaking her back to do so. So, while the same can’t be said for not breaking the bank, when it comes to these precious creations, some concessions can be afforded. So, let’s have at it.
One Strap-ers: These are like your prim and proper cousin, who might teeter the line of pretentiousness, albeit making you feel uncomfortable, until you find out that she likes to pound shots of Belvedere at 1 Oak. Translation: these things are easy to dress up, but just as cool-girl when dressed down. I’d recommend Steve Madden, as the three Stecy’s that I’ve amassed have yet to let me down. For high street class, try anything from Zara, but, if you’re feeling extra frivolous, go for Schultz, or Windsor Smith for Rihanna-level cool.
Shoes: Joes Jeans
Shoes: Joes Jeans
Lace-Ups: If I had to pick a favorite, these are it. The ultimate lazy-girl shoe, they’re less your ‘walk in the park’ shoe, more so your ‘I’m breaking necks as I walk in the park’ shoe without trying. Rock these with something casual, like a white tee, medium wash jeans, and understated mini, or bowler bag, as criss-crosses don’t just speak, they yell.
Shoes: Just Fab
Shoes: Just Fab
Caged: Your skin may look maimed after wearing these for more than an hour, but they’re worth the annoying appearance of strap indents. Like pretty much every other kind of strappy, these are better styled simply – at least before night. For after hours wear, I’d recommend a mini skirt and some leather. *Austin Powers voice* ‘yeah baby!!!’
Shoes: Michael Kors
Shoes: Michael Kors
Criss-Cross: These have a certain ‘je ne sais quoi'; classy and elegant while understated, you could take on everything from a board meeting to a baby shower in these Godsends. If you’re like Drake, and your BofA account says you’re ready for early retirement, invest in the Matilde pumps by Aquazzura. *Heart-eyes*

Pins & Needles Preview: Isaiah Jenkins

isaiah jenkins

St. Louis! If you haven't heard, Pins & Needles is THIS Saturday! This emerging designer showcase features only the best of local designers competing to be #1!  I had the honor of interviewing three of the designers to talk about everything from their beginnings to what to expect from them on Saturday, and first, we have Isaiah Jenkins!  Born in St. Louis to a family of many talents including music, art, and fashion, going into the field of art was inevitable.  But as most parents, Isaiah's had other dreams for him but still supported of his dream. Which goes hand in hand with his line, displaying a mix of what he loves about himself and life. It's for the diverse man that has many traits, being apart of any crowd who isn't afraid to be different and confident!

When was the first moment you knew you wanted to be a designer?
The first time I knew i wanted to be a designer would have to be when i was in middle school.  I had a notebook full of sketches.  I still have every sketch from when i started and I would always have them with me.  I was a bad student in every class except art and music but i didn't take it seriously to high school when i designed my best friends prom dress.

How would you classify your brand/line? Meaning what do you want people to feel or take away when they see your work.
I would describe it as exciting and edgy.  What i want people to feel when they see it is intrigued and amazed, I want them to want it, need it ,and then purchase it for themselves or someone else.

Isaiah JenkinsAs a fashion designer, where do you turn to for inspiration when it comes to creating new collections or looks?
I draw inspiration from everywhere including books I'm reading, architecture, and art.  I research online by using sites like Pinterest (it's my other bible lol), Google, and also just being around other creative people.  For me, inspiration is all around you just have to open your eyes.

How do you set yourself apart from other designers to make yourself unique?
What sets me a part from other designers? Hmm well, I'm not afraid to try different shapes, lines, and colors on a man, also I create a story for every collection and I tell that story through the garments and the way they move on the body.  I learned from my mentor, Nasheli Ortiz, to be nice to the fabric and do everything with love.

Isaiah Jenkins
What advice can you give other aspiring designers who are looking to take the step of pursuing a career in fashion design?
The advice I'd give other designers is don't be afraid to challenge yourself and push yourself to grow. Always be prepared to sew, whether you're in a class room or not you're always a student. With the internet at our disposal, we're always able to learn new techniques. Your best friend will always be your sewing machine and your dress form, be nice to them!Research is also another great tool and document everything in your sketchbook about your collection.

Who is your favorite designer (besides yourself) or favorite designer's collection?
I have quite a few for different reasons.  Nasheli Ortiz because I love how she uses structure and fabric.  I love Gareth Pugh and how dark and intriguing his collections are and also i love Carlo Brandelli for his use of tailoring.

Describe the essence of your brand is 3 words.
My line could be described as exciting, edgy, and daring.

Classic man? Nope try daring man! I'm excited to see what Mr. Jenkins has in store for Saturday, I'm sure it'll come wrapped with boom, bang, and then some!  Make sure not to miss out and get your tickets, and also stay tuned all week for more Pins & Needles Previews with other featured designers!

Curly Hair Must Haves!

curly hair

Hello everyone and Happy Mixed Girl Monday!  In celebrating being mixed race, one of the many daily struggles is maintaining my hair, especially with its curly texture.  My hair is curly but I find that most products targeted for curly hair tend to weigh down my curls or are not moisturizing enough to eliminate the frizz.  Today I thought I would share with you all some of my favorite curly hair products.

Miss Jessie's has become a new favorite brand for me. I think I have found the perfect styling cream for my hair's texture and the description of the product was enough to get me to purchase it! "Where do you fit in? You are a beautiful mix of different ethnicities but cannot find styling products that work for your unique multi-textured curls. Some products are too heavy and leave your curls oily and weighed down. Other products are just too light...." It's called Multi-Cultural Curls. (who would've guessed that).  Shea Moisture is another line of products that I was very pleased with trying. After dying my hair back to a natural black color, regular shampoos were washing out the dyes and this shampoo kept my color in tact and left my hair the cleanest it's ever felt! Jamaican Black Castor Oil is supposed to help grow hair longer and stronger and I would say this product does everything it claims especially because it is free of any harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens.

curly hairMixed Chicks Deep Conditioner keeps my hair tangle free and puts back in the right amount of
moisture into my curls without making them heavy. This will always be a staple for me.
Protein treatments are important for maintaining healthy curly hair. My favorite one to use comes in a packet that lasts me for about 4 treatments and it smells heavenly! The Palmer's Coconut Oil Protein Treatment is used just like a deep conditioner and contains Vitamin E and pure coconut milk which is essential. Love this stuff!  L'Oreal's Ever-Curl Sulfate Free line has to be one of my most favorites out of this list. All of the products smell amazing, seriously! The Hydracharge Conditioner is great for daily use when co-washing or using after my shampoo and the Hydracharge Sculpt & Hold Cream Gel is awesome. That stuff does not leave my hair feeling sticky or crunchy at all. Again, the smell is so amazing!

Because I diffuse my curls, (I personally can't go with wet hair) I use a heat protectant to protect my curls from getting any heat damage. I like to use the Tresemme Heat Tamer spray. Does anyone have any suggestions for others?  I know how much you are not supposed to detangle your curls with anything but a wide tooth comb or your fingers, but my hair gets very tangled quickly so I prefer to use the Wet
Brush to detangle my curls. The good thing about it is that it's gentle enough to use while your hair is wet, hence the name, so no damage here!

My last must-have on this list is a diffuser. I use the Remington Diamond Shine Damage Protection hairdryer with the diffuser attachment it came with. I got mine for just $20 and it dries my curls pretty quickly and leaves them voluminous, even on the lowest heat and power settings.
I am proud to be a curly girl, and I love trying out new products. These are definitely my staples. If any fellow curly-girls out there have products and favorites they would love to share, feel free! For more hair and beauty inspiration, follow my pinterest.

The Motto: Do What You Love

simply stylist conference

Do what you love, the motto we all should live by right? That's how I try to live my life, which has sparked me to be more adventurous, take more trips, and be involved more when it comes to this blog, and branding myself as a whole.  So when I heard about Simply Stylist I knew I had to jump on it.

simply stylist conference
A Saturday in Chicago, I attended the Simply Stylist Conference, surrounded by my fellow fashion and beauty bloggers, stylists, enthusiasts, and lovers, and immediately you felt in the air that it was going to be a good and productive day.

simply stylist conference

The fact is, I went by myself, no Diamond, no Aziza, no one I actually knew, so this forced me to jump out of my comfort zone and network with people, and if you know me you know that can be very hard (I have a phobia of people, yep).  But it turned out great!  I met some amazing girls, some who I am in the process of collabing with, and some I actually already knew, internet wise, but never met in person! (Shoutout to Abril of The Color Palette, love ya girl!)

simply stylist conference
I think what really set the mood was us being in such a beautiful venue, the Dana Hotel in Downtown Chicago, like it was better than any hotel I've even been to, no lie!  The scenery was amazing, lot's of space for networking and mingling, and it was just a great place to be for this amazing event.

simply stylist conference

Part of the conference I really enjoyed was the panel discussion.  Interviewed by Catt Sadler (of E! News), Corri McFadden, Sazan Barzoni, Joey Maalouf (he is sooooo funny!), and Jacey Duprie all shared their come ups, experiences, and current projects that definitely inspired everyone!  I literally was at full speed writing down ideas for companies and possible blogging conferences of my own.  From the panel discussion I realized that I can't just be stagnate, and I have to at least try something before I deem that I can't do it, because it might turn out I'm good at it and it could be very successful.

I wish I could go on and on about everything I did at the conference, I mean I can, it's my blog and shit, but instead I want you to check out the pics I took including the interactive experience we had after the conference!  And if you were at the conference drop your email below and let's stay in touch!

Chitown, Without Kanye Tho

jaunts and junkets

Chi-town oh Chi-town, how I miss thee.  I embarked on the lively city this past weekend for the Simply Stylist Conference, not knowing I would be so entranced and in love.  I've been to Chicago many of times, but only in the instance of visiting relatives, never actually seeing what Chicago had to offer, and this trip put me right in the middle of the action as I was downtown, in the heart of the city I would say, and oh did I have a good time, and more so this city opened my eyes that Chicago might be a place to be on a permanent basis.

I was only in Chicago for 2 days, but in those two days I saw ALOT! Being from St. Louis, our downtown area doesn't even compare to Chicago, not at all.  From restaurants, to main stream retailers and the upscale atmosphere, Chicago made me feel right as home as a fashion enthusiast.

I don't know what it was, from the walk to the hotel seeing more people than I have in a long time, eating a Chicago hotdog, or exploring around in the Four Seasons, downtown Chicago almost reminded me of a mini New York in a sense.  Everything was so past faced, moving, and on the go, and that's how I live my life now, I truly did not want to leave!
