How to Get Smooth, Healthy,Youthful Skin and Keep it!

The largest organ of our body is our skin. Your skin is your showcase and is the first thing others notice about you. Having healthy skin means just that, you are internally healthy and have no underlying health conditions that are problematic. Our skin can tell us many things, we just need to pay attention to those signs. For example, if your skin looks like it has a yellow tint to it accompanied with fatigue then your skin is telling you that you need iron. Skin is usually the first to show signs of "sickness" and is a good way to tackle those problems before they get severe. Now, we all have faced the occasional pimple right before a very important day. If you're like me, you find ways to reduce that pimple in size but first you complain and can't believe this is happening to you. Why is it happening? Their is an imbalance in hormones which throws your body off and stress only adds to this catastrophe. Our problem is that we usually like to gather up all the skin care products we only use for desperate times like these and try them all out until that pimple is gone. I guarantee this will only make it worse and leave your skin irritated. You can put that toothpaste down along with any other temporary fixes and do something different, like, adopting a skincare regimen. Your regimen should consist of steps you do when you wake up and right before you go to bed at night. Everyone can benefit from this and you will notice a difference in your skin after a week! I will include my regimen down below for those interested in what all should be included in a skincare regimen. The most important thing is that you be consistent and maintain a healthy diet. Try swapping your sugary drink for a lemon infused ice water which acts as a detox or get rid of those salty chips for a cup of yogurt with granola and almonds. Switching those bad habits to healthy ones can bring your skin back to life and you'll be mad you didn't try it sooner!

Skincare Regimen:

1. Cleanser- a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil is perfect, no harsh chemicals or fruity fragrance that may be irritating to some with sensitive skin. Try to use a non-fragrant cleanser for your face.

2. Exfoliator- I use two types, one for all over body and the other strictly for my face. I like to use a more natural exfoliator for my face. I mix lemon juice (simply squeeze a lemon for this), sugar (brown sugar for those with sensitive skin), and honey. Since you are applying this to your face be VERY gentle! You do not need to furiously scrub since the sugar is already doing that job for you. After about 15 secs, rinse and blot dry. Your skin will feel as soft as a babies bottom and look refreshed. Try it, trust me you will fall in love! Body exfoliation can be done 3-4 times a week with that same scrub or another of your choice. I use the coconut lime shea butter scrub from Wal Mart which smells amazing and have become addicted to exfoliating my body. It is such an easy and might I add, CHEAP way to get that spa skin for less. Buffing away those dead cells increases cell turnover which reveals more brighter skin.

3. Moisturizer- I like to use a moisturizer that contains an SPF. Cetaphil has a great facial moisturizer with an SPF 50+ which is excellent. It nourishes your skin while also protecting you from the suns harmful rays.

4. Sunscreen- This is an essential to your regimen and should always be used when outside and even indoors (sun rays can come through windows). I use a broadband sunscreen, this just means it protects from UVA/UVB rays. Your sunscreen should have an SPF 30 or higher to truly be protected. SPF means sun protection factor for those wondering. I use the Neutrogena sport that you can spray with an SPF 100+.

5. Facial Mask- A mask is great for days you just want to give your skin some TLC. Their are lots of natural masks that give your skin that glow you strive for. On days when I'm lounging around I'll make my favorite organic banana mask. You will need a banana, orange juice (freshly squeezed), honey, and olive oil. I leave it on for about 30min and rinse with really cold water (cold water tightens your pores). The results are immediate and you can do this about every other week.

6. Balanced Diet- Eat a diet rich in leafy green vegetables like spinach and broccoli. Drink plenty of water, test yourself and see if you can switch a sugary drink for water. Nuts, such as almonds are very good for your skin and hair. Also, exercising stimulates blood circulation to your skin which is beneficial for achieving clear acne-free skin.

This routine or one that is similar can maximize your skins appearance and maintain elasticity. Creating a regimen that is unique for your skin type will help you establish an understanding of what your body needs. Skip the make up and flaunt your skin for a change!
