What's Your Beauty Routine?

beauty

So I was just getting ready and thinking about what all I do for my beauty routine, and what other's do for theirs.  Simple I know, it's not complicated, just wanted to see if anyone does the same things I do lol!  My beauty routine consists of this:

Vaseline for my lips, it helps exfoliate for any lipstick I might where that day

I wash my face with Dove soap and then with Noxzema, then moisturize with Clearasil

For my piercings (nose and nipples) I use a basic saline solution to clean out the piercings to keep them from getting infected

Deodarant obviously, I love Degree spray on, it dries instantly

And lastly, lotion up with some type of Bath & Body Works or Victoria Secret products

Let me know what you do for your routine!

ATTENTION Guido Palau and Marc Jacobs: That's a Bantu Knot, Honey!

There was an article posted on a website on May 17, 2015 talking about hair trends and things of that nature that has caught a whooole lot of backlash over the past 24 hours. There's not a problem with that kind of post because AK and I talk about trends and things all the time. It's no biggie right?!? BUT here's where it rubbed me and everybody else the wrong way: this hair trend is something that's all of a sudden cool when people of another culture have been doing the same thing for years!

IF you're the type to get uncomfortable with conversations about race and things of that nature, you might want to stop here. No, I am not being hateful or racist or anything like that, but what I am going to do is express my opinion as an African American woman on the issue and the way I and so many other women see this.

Here's a picture/screenshot of the "Twisted Mini Bun" from the article featured on the website:

Now again, the problem isn't found with the hairstyle itself. It's the simple fact that the article stated that the hairstyle trend was inspired by a hairstylist by the name of Guido Palau. What this article fails to mention is the fact that the style is really inspired by the Bantu knot that originated waaay back in Africa before anybody currently on this earth was born. I decided to do a little research on the history of this "new" hairstyle and here's what I found:

  • Bantu (meaning "people") knots are also known called Zulu knots and it's origin goes all the way back to West Africa.
  • Bantu is actually a culture of people in Africa and has more than 400 groups in the Africa.
There's so much more I could type in, but this isn't a research paper and in any of the history you find, you will not find Marc Jacobs or Guido Palau's name ANYWHERE in it. Now for those reading that hasn't done any of the research, here's what Bantu knots look like:

When I was transitioning from relaxed to natural, Bantu knots were my absolute go-to for maintaining my hair and creating a super cute style while my hair was going through such a drastic change. Some people choose to wear them as you see Rihanna wearing them on the left just as a protective style or to allow their hair time to set, but most will take them down to reveal a gorgeous wave or curly style that will last a few days or so. Click here if you want to see the results I'm speaking of.

Now, when Rihanna wore these "twisted mini buns", even she spoke negatively about them and called them "ghetto" while describing her look as "ghetto goth"! People thought she looked crazy and all kinds of everything opposite of "chic" and "edgy". Throw Marc Jacobs and Guido Palau's name on it and put it on a fair skinned girls' heads and now it's cool?!? Oh no! I have a problem with this!

There have been a lot of things happening lately that African American people have been doing for years that have now all of a sudden become cool because a fair skinned woman started to do it. I'm probably going to talk about it in another post as it pertains to hair and beauty so look out for it.

To touch briefly on it though. So many companies and magazines have been brought under fire for taking things from the subcultures of the world and "bringing them out" and "making them cool", "chic", "sexy", and "edgy" as if they were the geniuses behind the idea when they KNOW it's been something being done for years and don't even part their lips to give credit to the source.

So many times in the past have I with my own eyes seen the same things African American- and you know what? I won't even say just African Americans. I'll say any ethnic culture. Anyway, I have seen so many times where people of an ethnic culture would be ridiculed, judged, and made fun of for the same thing that is ripped off the next week, month, or even year(s) as the hot new thing to do.

The African American and natural hair community have set the article on fire. So much so, that as I went back to the website as I was typing this post, the article is NOT FOUND all of a sudden. I typed in the same keywords that I used earlier this morning to read the article for myself and I found NOTHING. Peep the screenshot on the right!

Back It Up

Don’t be fooled by the title – I’m not talking about Biggie songs…I’m talking about backless tops! These are gems – I repeat, G-E-M-S. They’re easy to wear, even if you have big boobs…but, a moment of silence for you if you do and you’re a devout backless-er. As someone who faces that challenge, I must argue I’d take backless over bra-clad any day, however, it’s a production of Kate Upton proportions, if you’re picking up what I’m putting down. But, don’t look back! Buy yourself as many backless tops…and dresses, and jumpsuits and rompers, that your heart desires; it’s a one-way ticket to happiness and damn good fashion! I’m wearing a pink acid wash peplum from Urban Outfitters, with medium wash skinnies by Joe’s Jeans medium wash skinnies and black ankle-strap heels by Joe’s Jeans – style these with loose waves, dainty jewelry, and a dressed-to-kill-attitude! Shop all that good stuff, here. Happy shopping! -L’Addict

L'Addict Loves: The Satchel

This bag is reliable…like emergency contact at the doctor reliable (sorry mom). But seriously…facetiousness aside, satchels sure know how to save a girl’s life. I like to think of them as the brainy, beautiful, wise older sister of bags – as their timeless style is never lost on function, but they’re still playful enough to bring out for some after work drinks! I’m currently fawning over the Mini Perry by Rebecca Minkoff, which you can happily shop here.

Colored Pencils Doubles as Eyeliner? Crayola says NO!

A video has recently went viral of a beauty vlogger and several others on YouTube showing how to turn your colored pencils into dups for eyeliner. At first, this seems to be an AWESOME idea mainly because you can buy 10 colored pencils for way less than the price of a quality eyeliner from Walgreens or Sephora. On top of that, it looks really cool! I personally would love to do anything possible to save me some money by doing a few DIYs here and there, but not at the possible expense of my health and safety.

Here's the video that sparked the controversy:

Crayola has since released a statement saying:
"As the manufacturer of children's products, safety is our top priority at Crayola. Although our products are nontoxic, we do not recommend using them to make eyeliner, lip stick, or other make-up, and strongly discourage their use in this manner. The products were never intended to be used on the skin or face in this manner. Make-up goes through specific and rigorous testing because it is intended to be used on the skin. Because they were never meant to be used as make-up, our colored pencils or crayons have not been  tested in the same way and should not be used as a cosmetic. They are not designed, tested or approved for this purpose.

With this I somewhat agree. I personally wouldn't put something that wasn't formulated to go near my eye, near my eye, but I do think that the products could be used on occasion for face coloring or something like that, but if I'm not mistaken, they may have something like that (correct me if I'm wrong), or you could just go get face paint.

Crayola did a great job by releasing a statement because the second someone uses a colored pencil on
their lid and their eye swells to the size of the moon, they're going to try to sue the company of the product. It wouldn't necessarily make sense to try to sue anyway because it's obvious what the product is for, but you know that people are gonna try it anyway and just in case that happens, Crayola made sure to cover their butts reeeeeeeeaaaal good! It appears though, that Crayola execs and their employees need to get on the same page because as you saw in the video, she called Crayola and one the reps said that it was OK to basically get the product in your eye and because it is non-toxic, it was OK.

I don't know. I'm really on the fence about this. I kind of have a problem with sensitive skin so I personally wouldn't try it on my own face, but for some people, this may not actually bother them. Though the products are said to be non toxic, I don't think it's formulated for the continued consumption of the product.

What do you guys think? Yay or nay to using crayons and colored pencils for makeup?

Love & Relationships: Why Cant Women Be in Control of Their Kitty?

intimacy

So as you all know we started this new category, Love & Relationships.  Even though we're fashion bloggers I think it's ok for us to veer off into other categories, it keeps our minds fresh and frankly, we can do what the fuck we want, it's our blog (lol).  But anyway, this topic spoke to me because I am sooooooooooo tired of the double standard about how men can do what they want with their penis and get praised for it but if women do it we get called hoes.  First and foremost if you know me you know I am a very sexual person.  I don't mind talking about sex, and I don't mind engaging in it.  Not saying I have sex with everyone, but the person I do choose to have sex with, let's just say they don't complain.  I don't mind talking about sex toys, sex positions, piercings, none of that, because in a way I think it's liberating.

When it comes to sex I am tired of hearing and people saying how if women give it up on the first night we're not considered "wifey material".  BULL SHIT!  I'm sorry but it is.  Of course I've heard the reasoning behind this theory of why marry the cow if you can get the milk for free (or some nonsense like that) but I think there's a big difference if a woman is choosing to just have sex with you and if she is having sex with everyone.  No matter if it happens on the first night or months down the line, if she's only having sex with you, how does that take away from her credibility to be your "wife" so to speak?

The fact is sex is a major part of a relationship, you cannot argue that.  Another fact is you cannot deny or control attraction when it happens.  And third fact, shit just happens.  But just because I decide to have sex with you because we're both feeling each other and we're both horny and like sex doesn't not make me wifey material, no sir negative.  To be honest I rather get the sex part out the way first, because if I wait and you can't long stroke it, I'm going to be one mad chick.

Sex shouldn't take away from someone's quality as far as if they're wife material or not, more so because a woman should be able to choose what she wants to do with her body and not feel guilty just like men do.  Now it would be a different story if she was having sex with multiple dudes in a week or even in a day or had multiple boyfriends (still her choice but, not highly respected). No matter if you have sex with her on the first night or after a few months, she can still be a ho regardless, and waiting a few months doesn't guarantee you have weeded out if she's a ho or not.

Where I think the problem comes in is feelings sometimes get intertwined into something that is considered by one party as a one night stand, or friends with benefits.  I will admit, us a women love putting a meaning, title, and feelings to actions we are given, but what you men don't realize is we want you to be upfront with us.  If you don't wanna take it farther than sex let us know.  Our feelings might be hurt for a little minute, but we'll get over it.  We rather be hurt a little in the beginning than to look stupid down the road, and we will respect you sooooooooooo much more if you men were to just be honest.

I want to know what you all think, do you have a rule on when you give up the kitty, and if so what are your reasonings behind it

And the Liesbter Goes to.....!

As you all know we have been nominated for the Liebster Award, thanks once again to Living Lesh for the nomination!  In my post I said I would nominate 3 bloggers but I lied, why?  Because one I do what I want, but two I loved all of these blogs so much that I felt they were all deserving!  So I nominate....

#RelationshipGoals?!?

OK! So this has been eating at me for a looong time and I'm so glad that AK and I decided that it was time to create another subject matter called "LS&R (Love, Sex, and Relationships)" because maaan do we have a lot to talk about as well when it comes to this stuff.

For anybody that's online, particularly on social media sites, you're probably already know what a hashtag is and what this one is all about. For those of you who don't know why the pound sign is put in front of words everyplace that you look, it's because it creates a link that pulls up everything on the subject matter and others have tagged under the topic as well. This definitely makes finding information and people's opinions on things easier to find. But anyway! Lets talk about these "Relationship Goals".

I don't know where this trend came from or who thought it was a good idea, but it needs to STOP and STOP now. I could barely get the whole "#RelationshipGoals" phrase typed and it popped up at about 3 letters in. *sigh* Like... where do I start? I'll start with the fact that I am currently in a relationship (and have been for almost 2 years) and Honey trust, our relationship isn't full of matching Nike Jordans and coordinating outfits and a bunch of pictures of us slobbing all over each other in public and/or laid up in the bed. And we definitely aren't a posy couple either. Now, I'm not necessarily bashing anyone who does these things and are in genuinely healthy relationships because I don't think there's anything wrong with PDA and having matching things, BUT most people are out there capturing every moment and only sharing it online for the attention and the likes.

I love to see people in love and things of that nature, but I am sooo over the Flipgram videos playing "All of Me" by John Legend (no shade because I looove that song, it's beautiful) with all of these mushy pictures and screenshots of their lovey dovey relationship.

Again, I'm not upset and I'm not jealous because where I am? I am more than happy, but I feel like people are starting to jump onto a bandwagon and doing it just for the heck of it. Some people go as far as to recruit someone to be their "Bae" so that they can have those "moments" together. Like... ugh!

I feel like it's become a competition about who loves their mate the most because if you're not doing what we're doing or have what we have, then it's not real. I also think that it kind of puts out a false sense of what relationships are really like. The best moments between my boyfriend and I are the moments that we don't capture with our camera phone. It's those moments that define the relationship in my opinion. Anybody can smile and take a picture and "look happy", but that doesn't necessarily that they really are. There's a backstory to every moment in every photo and whether it's good or bad is what we don't know. People are really out here selling out the authenticity of their relationships just so that their meme can go viral across the social networks and people can say that they love their relationship (in which they usually know nothing about) and they look good together. It's even turned into materialism in a way.

It's deeper than looking good together. Are you minds on the same page or even in the same book? No person should ever want to model their relationship after someone else's because you don't know what's really going on. Yeah you see them smiling and laughing together all the time and he buys her all of these nice things and she takes good care of him as well, but little do you know, he's cheated on her several times with several women and has even gotten a girl pregnant all while they're together. For all we you know, he could be abusing her and vice versa (no discrimination here!). A lot of people are looking at the outside and judging the book by it's cover, but can't even handle what's inside of the book.

You can have goals on what it is that you want in a relationship and the kind of person you want to experience this thing with, but don't base your relationship or your actual relationship goals on stuff like this, you'll fail every time.

What do you guys think about the hashtag? Are there any other hashtag phrases that wish would disappear? Comment below!

How to Use RaffleCopter for Awesome Giveaways (+a Link to Ours!)

rafflecopter

So this post was asked to be done by one of my good friends and fabulous designer Kris Cole of Prominent Sanctuary.  I actually saw her at the mall and she asked me how do I do our giveaways on our blog since she was starting a blog herself and wanted to give away a piece from her collection.  And for everyone that has asked me the same question, my answer is simple, Rafflecopter.  Rafflecopter has been the easiest giveaway system that I can find thus far, and for all of my bloggers, you can set up a giveaway or contest in less than 10 minutes!  I'll actually take you step by step on how to set a giveaway up using one that we will launch today, courtesy of ALIVE Magazine!

So first you'll want to choose from the packages listed below.  The free package is very much suitable for anyone but if you want to use Pinterest or other features try the Basic package, you DO NOT need the premium package.  For these purposes I will show you what it looks like to set up a giveaway with the Basic package.  For any package though, you will get a 7 day free trial, just FYI.

rafflecopter

After signing up, you will be taken to your dashboard where you can create new giveaways, manage the ones you are currently running, and choose a winner(s) once your giveaway is over (go all the way to the right corner of the Rafflecopter demo box and click the x, we will create a brand new giveaway).

rafflecopter

First step is to click on "Add A Prize".

rafflecopter

Here you will name the things you are giving away.  For example we will be giving away tickets to the #WeHeartSTL Celebration hosted by ALIVE Magazine.  With the basic package you can add a photo to give the prize a little bit of glam, but you won't be able to with the free package,

rafflecopter

After you have set up your prizes, you will now choose how your readers will enter into your giveaway.  My first option I always choose is for our readers to visit and like our Facebook page.  In this option you will put your Facebook page's name, the url, the point value, which is how many entries they will receive for doing this task, and if this task is mandatory or not.  I suggest making it mandatory.  It's not that hard for your readers to do and you get more likes and follows!

rafflecopter

There are other ways that your readers can enter into your giveaway, such as following your account on Twitter, making a blog comment, or even creating another entry task of your own.

rafflecopter

Then it's time to name your giveaway.

rafflecopter

Most importantly you want to set terms and conditions of your giveaway such as who can enter, how long after the giveaway is over that the winner(s) will be notified, who is sponsoring the giveaway, and privacy policy statements.  You can click right below the terms and conditions box to use the pre-filled template Rafflecopter provides.

rafflecopter

Now you will preview your giveaway to see if it looks how you want, with the basic package you can change the background color of the widget box.

rafflecopter

Last but not least you will want to embed your giveaway into your blog by simply copying and pasting the code.  If you use a Facebook fan page you can also install it into there as well.

rafflecopter

And here is how it looks in your blog!  Hopefully that was an easy tutorial on how to use Rafflecopter for your giveaways.  Speaking of giveaways, as I mentioned earlier, we are giving away 3 tickets to the #WeHeartSTL Celebration hosted by ALIVE Magazine!  Giveaway will launch today at 2pm CST and go until May 25th (Monday) 5pm CST, so basically when I get off of work (lol). Simply click here to enter!  And let us know if you have any questions on the tutorial we did!

Pop Some Bubbly and Pour it on Your Head!

Now, I know Beyonce said not to drop that alcohol, but what about pouring it on your head?!? And no, I'm not talking about dying your hair a deep red wine color. Now I've heard of some crazy things that people put on their hair (like egg yolks and urine to treat dandruff) for whatever the reason is, but I can honestly say that I never saw this coming!

Apparently, red wine has some things in it that can do some great things for your hair.

Word is that it's a natural ingredient that gives your hair a lustrous shine and can also fix hair problems like frizz, hair loss, dryness, and dandruff. Red wine contains resveratrol and is considered a preventer of hair loss. It keeps down inflammation and the death of cells, which causes your hair to fall out. For this reason, it aids in hair growth. Consuming only half a glass (depending on the size of your cup ;-)) a day increases the blood flow and circulation in the scalp and gives strength to the vessels reducing flakiness, dandruff and the itchiness of the scalp. You can use your regular shampoo and conditioner to clean your hair, but for that shine boost and frizz reduction, simply rinse the hair with the red wine. I just hope it doesn't stain the sink/shower. Have you seen what red wine does to clothes and carpets?!? It's a disaster!

I just have one question! Does the boxed wine work just as well as the bottled wines from the grocery store or Napa Valley? Ha ha! Don't shake your head because I know you were probably thinking the same thing!

So! If you're EVER in a situation where someone decides that they would rather pour their wine on you Basketball Wives style instead of drinking it, don't be upset. Your hairstyle would be ruined, but hey, you just got a quick, impromptu masque treatment that will benefit your skin and hair. Hmph! Me personally, I'd rather drink it (even though I don't necessarily like the taste of red wine, but that may be because it was boxed... ha ha!), but hey, more power to you!

A glass a day keeps the clogged drains away! Have you tried it? Tell me what you think!

Liebster Award!

liebster award

So I am sooooo excited to be nominated by Living Lesh for the Liebster Award.  The Liebster Award promotes new bloggers in the blogosphere through other new bloggers nominating the blogs that they are connected with and have found interest in connecting. It's just always a good feeling to be recognized by other bloggers!

The rules tend to vary with this award but the basic idea is that once you are nominated, you answer the questions that have been laid out by those who have nominated you and then you nominate another group of new bloggers to receive the award and place questions for them to answer.  Here are the answers to my questions, and what I want you guys to do is if you're a blogger or know of a blogger who should be nominated drop your email and blog link in the comments, I will choose 3 fellow bloggers to pass the award to!  And to the bloggers I do nominate, check the bottom of this blog post and copy your Q&A questions! I will also send you a personal nomination blog button!

Who is your hero in life?

I would honestly say my daughter.  Strange I know but it's because she's who I am, a little tiny version of myself but more confident.  It's surprising that a 3 year old embodies the soul of a grown woman, fearless, and confidence that she can do anything she wants.  I wasn't like that growing up, even a few years ago I was still shy and timid, so my daughter has taught me to not be scared to say how you feel and stay true to who you really are.

What is your favorite outfit? (Post a picture if you like)

Yoga pants.  I will argue with you until the death of me.  I am the most lazy person on the face of the earth, it might not seem like it but I am so if I don't have to dress up, yoga pants are the way to go.

If you could describe yourself in one word or a phrase, what would it be?

Unbothered.

What is your favorite song lyric and why?

Lol don't laugh but it's Kendrick Lamar's MAAD City just because he says AK47 (my name obvi) and he's my husband lol

"With the sliding door, fuck is up?
Fuck you shooting for if you ain't walking up?You fucking punk, picking up the fucking pumpPicking off you suckers, suck a dick or die or sucker punchA wall of bullets coming fromAK's, AR's, "aye y'all. Duck."That's what momma said when we was eating that free lunchAw man, God damn, all hell broke looseYou killed my cousin back in '94. Fuck yo truce"

What is your dream career?

To work for myself, hopefully blogging, or designing, event planning, or all three.

What has been your favorite summer vacation?

Summer vacations I really don't do, instead we throw epic parties at my house, sorry mom.

How would you describe your personal style?

Un-tailored.  I don't like being defined by a certain style, and I like pieces and garments from many different set looks, and I combine them together into something I like.

What drives your blog and why did you decide to start one?

I initially started this blog as another way to get my name out in the fashion industry.  Now after 2 years, my personal drive for this blog and our brand is to show everyone that you don't have to have the same bubblegum picture perfect look or opinion to matter in this industry.  We're raw, we're blunt, we're unconvential.  We cuss, we question what most wouldn't, and that what makes us who we are, and makes our brand authentic.

BLOGGER NOMINATION Q&A QUESTIONS:

  1. Why did you start blogging?
  2. What's your favorite Starbucks drink?
  3. What's your favorite food?
  4. What's your favorite thing to do during your free time?
  5. What are your aspirations in life?
  6. How has your blog helped you develop yourself as a person?
  7. Describe yourself in one word or short phrase.

A Dip Into What's to Come

Ok guys, so since it's Sunday, thought it would be fitting to deem this Sunday Funday!  So in light of Sunday Funday, let's sit back, relax, and watch a few of these shows for the Fall/Winter 2015/16 season, and I must say I am really excited, enjoy!

Lindbergh Grand Opening

lindbergh

Let's take it back to a little thing I like to call GENT!, the first ever men's designer showcase in St. Louis.  From that, Lindbergh was introduced to everyone, and now they are making their retail debut.

Inspired by St. Louis’ own Charles Augustus Lindbergh, the STL store is the second in the country, and it’s making some serious waves on the fashion scene with its promise to pay tribute to the history of St. Louis and make the newly opened store one of its flagship locations.GQ recognized the brand for its quality-to-price ratio and Nordstrom picked up the line nationwide.
Event space is limited. RSVP here for the Grand Opening Event on May 21. Arrive early for a must-have gift bag and stay late for giveaways of Lindbergh’s iconic bomber jacket. The see-and-be-seen event—produced in conjunction with Brainchild Events and supported by ALIVE Magazine and Vital Voice—is donating a portion of sales from the evening to benefit the Animal Protective Association (APA). Log on to LindberghShop.com to see all of the incredible styles available in-store now.
Spread the word and share your excitement for St. Louis' best new men's shopping destination using the hashtag #LindberghSTL.

*RSVP for yourself and a guest. Additional guests should submit individual RSVPs. Tickets include food, drinks, entertainment, shopping discounts and more. Gift bags will be available to the first 100 men to arrive. All RSVPs are subject to email subscription from Lindbergh, ALIVE Magazine, Vital VOICE, BrainChild Events and all partners and affiliates.
